It’s that time of year again! New Years and new beginnings are just around the corner and I am here to help you get your home ready. Why focus on the home and not all those new years resolutions you have made? Having a clean home psychologically helps you destress and feel more relaxed. With less clutter and a fresh environment you can better focus on your goals. A total home reset takes time, but the good news is that you probably wont mind because it is so satisfying. Before you start, get your family onboard and be ready to assign tasks to everyone each step of the way.
Are you ready for a sparkling, fresh home to help reset your mindset so you can crush your goals this year?
PUT AWAY HOLIDAY DECOR
First things first, get all that holiday décor boxed up and put away. You cant start fresh with this year hanging around so first thing is to put away anything that doesn’t have a place in your home year round. After this, your home is probably feeling a little worse, a little bare or awkward. That’s okay, it will motivate you to keep going!
PURGE
This is the hardest part, so bear with me. Go through every room of the home and do a large scale purge of things that you no longer need. Take this seriously, the more you get rid of the better you will feel. I have a step by step guide here if you are looking to minimize and truly simplify your life. The general rule is that if you haven’t used something in a year, it can go. Don’t forget to make a donation pile for everything in good condition. After this step your home is probably already feeling better.
Closet – clothes, accessories, undergarments
Bedroom – Old sheets, general clutter
Bathroom – expired, old or unused products
Living room/playroom – toys, stained blankets, old electronics
Kitchen – expired pantry items, Tupperware without lids, expired medication, etc…
Home office – Old files, pens that don’t work, junk.
DEEP CLEAN
This is the step where you will finally start to FEEL the difference in your home. Deep clean every room of the house from top to bottom. Organize each cabinet and drawer, wipe down shelves, deep clean carpet, change your air filters, do all the deep cleaning you usually put off. Your home should now be sparkling and feel like you’ve done all you can do…. But don’t forget the finishing touches!
INVEST IN SMALL UPGRADES
What small things drive you crazy that you could easily change? Could you rearrange some furniture for a new layout? Upgrade your yellowish lights to a bright daylight style? Does your entryway always look messy and need a shoe and coat hanger station? This is the time to invest (big or small) and do those projects you’ve been wanting to do.
THE FINAL TOUCH
Open the windows and let in the fresh air if you can (obviously this is only for those who live in warm places during the holidays). Pick a day with moderate temperature and get the fresh air flowing. Finally, light a clean and refreshing candle and enjoy your beautiful home. I recommend getting a new fresh scented candle and make it your classic and go to. You know how hotels have those signature scents that make them feel expensive? Find the scent that makes you feel that way about your home.
If you’ve followed each of these steps you should feel very accomplished and ready to rest and relax. Take some time to enjoy your space while getting ready to crush your goals this year. I am so proud of you for taking on this major project and I cant wait to hear the ways the change helps you mentally relax and feel your best!
